It is good to have some heurestics in life to safe time and congitive load. I have built several over time, here are some how I pick what to watch or read
- It has a rating in top 20 percent (above 4 on Goodreads for books or above 8 on IMDB for Movies and TV) – there is too much average and below average stuff produced that people miss the great stuff
- It is at least 2 years old (sometimes I broke this for few movies) – good stuff holds over time, do not get into hype
- I mostly do not care about genre or topic (if I do I usually break the two rules above) – great stuff is great stuff, you will have great experience or learn something new if you go outside your usual topics
- I do not care when it was produced – I have read and watched so much stuff dozens or hundreds years olds that I do not care anymore about the technical quality. The content is the king
- It is legaly available to me (I can watch it on a streaming service, movie theater, buy it or borrow it) – so much stuff is available on platforms on which I can support the creators, that it does not make sense to me to waste time pirating. If something is missing, it will be available sooner or later somewhere
